Employment Discrimination

Employers cannot discriminate on the basis of race, sex, age, or disability.  Schulman & Kaufman, LLC has experience working to ensure that such discrimination does not go unpunished.  For example, when a Baltimore City department instituted a racial purge of all of its white employees, Schulman & Kaufman fought for compensation for one of the fired employee, eventually securing a $483,000 judgment, in addition to attorney's fees.

Governmental employers may have additional obligations, such as refraining from infringing on their employees’ right to speak freely about matters of public concern. For example, when two Baltimore City Department of Public Works employees were subjected to retaliation because they testified about the dangerous condition of the city landfill and gave information to the F.B.I., Schulman & Kaufman, LLC was able to protect the employees’ jobs, and successful prosecuted a federal court civil rights case in which the employees were awarded damages and their attorney’s fees.
