Municipalities and other taxing authorities seek to obtain the maximum amount of taxes from property owners; especially, shopping malls and other large-scale commercial enterprises.  Schulman & Kaufman has long-time experience negotiating on behalf of these enterprises in order to ensure that they are not paying more than their “fair share” and that the assessments levied by taxing authorities accurately reflect true market conditions and value.  Although Schulman & Kaufman usually is able to negotiate a fair resolution of a newly-elevated tax assessment without resort to litigation, the firm does have a proven track record when it has been necessary to pursue protests with the State Department of Assessments and Taxation and appeals to local Property Tax Assessments Appeals Boards, as well as trial and appellate litigation concerning tax assessments.
